Jonathan Seeks Scholarship For African Youths
Nigeria’s former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has called for scholarships for talented African youths who are disadvantaged by low incomes.
Jonathan made the call in his remarks during the 11th graduation ceremony of the Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) in Kampala.
Jonathan, who is the Chancellor of the University, in his remarks made available to The Tide’s source in Abuja, assured the University of his continued support.
“We will continue to focus on removing barriers to access of higher education for many African youths who are talented but disadvantaged by low incomes.
“We will, therefore, need to look for scholarships for the talented but poor youths, even if it means connecting them to loan schemes where they can pay later,” Jonathan said.
The former Nigeria President also advocated for collaboration between academia and industry within African continent to address some of the challenges facing the region.
“We need to engage industry across the region and the continent with a view to creating meaningful and productive academia-industry partnerships.
“This will work better if the academia supports industry with action research to strengthen production, distribution and marketing while industry supports the university.
Jonathan commended the CUU leadership’s efforts to surpass the school pre-pandemic performance at a time when other universities were still struggling to recover from the effects of COVID-19.
He also commended CUU’s collaboration with other universities and institutions, saying, “I know this leads to exchange of ideas and creation of opportunities for students and faculty in the collaborating institutions.
“Progressive institutions know that collaboration is better than competition; and that there is a lot we can do together to take our universities to greater heights.”
Jonathan, who congratulated the 2022 class granduands and their parents, also advised the students to embrace success.
“To succeed, you must be intentional in embracing success, anchor habits such as time management, planning and executing your plans, continuous learning and reflection”, he stated.
He urged them to be Committed to excellence, taking personal care to avoid causes of preventable diseases or death and networking with other resourceful persons.
“It is important you develop big goals and a determination to realise them. Understand that what differentiates the powerful from the powerless in the 21st Century is mindset.
“The powerful have understood that they can create a lifestyle they desire. They are driven from within; and apply relevant wisdom to fill gaps and solve challenges of society. They are able to do all these because they utilise the power of their mind.
“Today’s accomplishment is already a sign that you can achieve more if you continue to work hard. You have no excuse to fail.
“I charge you to go out and change the world beginning with your person, families and communities,” he added.
Rivers state Deputy Governor Professor Ngozi Nma Odu has commended “The Port Harcourt City One Love,”a Port Harcourt based humanitarian orgnisation For it’s commitment towards alleviating the sufferings of the poor and vulnerable in the society.
Professor Ngozi Nma Odu said this while speaking at this year’s edition of “operation feed the needy” a yearly outreach program of “The Port Harcourt City One Love ” in Port Harcourt.
The Deputy Governor said by feeding more than sixty thousands hungry people within the past six years, the Port Harcourt City One Love Movement has distinguished itself as a club that cares for the less privilege in the society.
She commended the , organization for listing eleven thousand persons to be fed in the current exercise.
Meanwhile The Port Harcourt City One Love has planned a permanent solution to the problem of feeding the poor in the state.
The leader of the group Mr Idaere Gogo Ogan who said this in an interview with newsmen during the distribution of food items to the poor and vulnerables in Port Harcourt said the organization is planning a permanent food kitchen where poor and vulnerable persons can work in anytime and get fed.
Idaere Gogo Ogan said more than sixty thousands poor and vulnerable persons across Port Harcourt City and environs have been fed since the inception of “The operation feed the needy” program six years ago,adding that so far sixty thousands poor and vulnerable persons have beneffited.
He described the group as a platform to promote friendship, brotherhood, community development empathy and feeding the less privilege and hungry people
“That’s what we are doing today here,so we started the exercise six years ago”.he said.
Ogan said the effort was a private sector driven initiative but added “it also involves people in Government because the platform does not recognize any division,we bring everybody together in unity , friendship and brotherhood”he said.
He said the effort will go along way in alleviating hunger especially following the prevailing hunger in the country.
According to him “you know the country is very tough, people are hungry people are starving, there is a whole lot of economic hardship,so for us, this is just our own way of reaching out, our own social contribution to what is very difficult”he said.
Over eleven thousand persons were fed in the just concluded exercise.
Areas of coverage include, Isaac Boro park, Port Harcourt prison/Macoba, Borokiri/Enugu waterside Bundu areas Waterlines and others.
Some of the beneficiaries including an 80 years old widow commended the movement for the annual programm and urged other organizations to emulate them
