Nigeria’s D’Tigress Kicked Out Of FIBA Women’s World Cup
Nigeria’s senior female basketball team and Africa champions, the D’Tigress have been kicked out of the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup slated for Australia in October, Tidesports source report.
The Federation of International Basketball Associations, FIBA confirmed Nigeria’s withdrawal from international basketball competitions by inviting Mali to replace D’Tigress at the upcoming FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.
FIBA, in a statement released in Mies, Switzerland yesterday, said it was inviting Mali to replace Nigeria in view of its position as the next ranked team from Group B of the qualifiers.
Nigeria’s D’Tigress had qualified for the global event at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament held at Belgrade, Serbia in February.
The World Cup is scheduled for Australia from September 22 to October 1.
But in May, Nigeria’s Federal Government said it was withdrawing Nigerian teams from international competitions for a period of two years.
The Tidesports source reports that this was as a result of the protracted leadership crisis in the Nigeria Basketball Federation.
FIBA has now said it was informed about the decision and subsequently communicated with the NBBF board led by Musa Kida.
“In spite of FIBA’s request, it has become clear that against the circumstances created by the government’s decision, the NBBF is unable to confirm its participation in the World Cup.”
The world basketball governing body said it must now react to that development and act accordingly.
“Given the multiple strict deadlines that cannot be postponed in order to ensure the successful staging of a major international event.
“These are all in relation to visa procedures, schedules, ticket sales, accommodations, friendly games, preliminary rosters, flight tickets, accreditations, etc.
“In order to also protect the integrity of the competition, the FIBA Executive Committee has decided in this regard,” it said.
FIBA said it would in due course announce whether there would be any other decisions related to NBBF’s participation in other international competitions and any potential disciplinary measures.
FIBA is an independent association formed by 212 National Basketball Federations throughout the world.
It is recognised as the sole competent authority in basketball by the International Olympic Committee.

FIFA rankings: S’Eagles drop Position, remain sixth in Africa
The new rankings, released via FIFA’s official X handle on Thursday, reflect the team’s continued struggles under Coach Eric Chelle amid a stuttering 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
This marks a second consecutive decline after the Nigerian side dropped from 43rd to 44th in August on the back of poor outings in recent international matches.
Despite Nigeria’s setback, several African teams made progress. Morocco remains the continent’s highest-ranked side, sitting 11th in the world after winning eight of their last nine matches. Senegal, Egypt, Algeria and Côte d’Ivoire complete Africa’s top five.
Lesotho slipped to 153rd place, while Benin Republic, Nigeria’s upcoming opponent, climbed to 93rd. South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, who held the Super Eagles to a 1-1 draw in June, rose to 55th, strengthening their bid for World Cup qualification.
Zimbabwe had the biggest slide down the ranking table, dropping nine places to 125th position in the world.
The rankings highlight Nigeria’s struggle to regain form on the global stage as key rivals continue to surge ahead.
Similarly, the Super Falcons of Nigeria remain 36th best in the world], while the Spanish female national team replaced the USA at the top of the women’s ranking.
