NB Launches N56bn New Expansion Project
The Chairman, Nigerian Breweries PLC, Chief Kolawole Jamodu, has expressed absolute confidence that the N56billion expansion embarked upon at Ama Brewery facilities at Amaeke Ngwo in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State would not only lead to increased Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state, but would at the same time, generate more employment for hundreds of unemployment youths now roaming the streets in search of unavailable jobs.
Jamodu, who made this known during the commissioning of the Ama Brewery expansion civil works, said that the move would also give rise to increased economic activities in Enugu State in particular and the entire South-East Zone in general.
According to him, the project would be executed in two phases, with the first phase to be completed in 2022 in full compliance with international environment and safety standards.
Describing Ama Brewery, which started production in 2003 as the most modern brewery in West Africa, the NB PLC chairman noted that when the expansion is completed, the Brewery capacity would be boosted from 3.0million hectolitres to 4.8million hectolitres in the first phase and to 5.3million hectolitres in the second phase.
The Nigerian Breweries Plc, he went on, has been listed as one of the highest tax-paying companies in Nigeria and the highest in the manufacturing industry, with tax and duty payments of approximately N416billion since 2016.
“Nigerian Breweries PLC is a long-term investor in Nigeria, operating in the country for over 75 years, since 1946.
“Today, we have 840 staff who contribute to the growth of Enugu State via tax payments and other levies. In 2021, Nigerian Breweries PLC was awarded ‘the most consistent corporate tax payer to Enugu State Government by the government of Enugu State Internal Revenue Service’ with payments of N423.9million in PAYE taxes to the state, as well as withholding tax of N5.68millon”.
He further maintained that in 2021 alone, the company paid over N400million in employee taxes, levies and other duties to the Enugu State Government, and commended Governor IfeanyiUgwuanyi for supporting the company and providing an enabling environment for the business to thrive over the years.
He also expressed happiness that the partnership with the Enugu State Government has seen them invest hundreds of millions of naira in various community projects and social investment initiatives in the areas of health, education, community infrastructure and sports development.

Speaking during the event, President of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Mansur Ahmed, said that the expansion of the brewery was key to the optimisation of national industrial capacity which would further improve competitiveness.
Ahmed, who was represented by the Managing Director of MAN, SegunAjayi, said that the brewery was one of the best in the entire West Africa, describing the expansion as a step in the right direction.
In his address, Enugu State Governor, IfeanyiUgwuanyi commended the NB PLC for its wise decision to embark on further expansion which would expand the company’s market share in the beverage market.
Represented by the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, Ugwuanyi assured NB PLC that his government would always provide an enabling environment for the company, adding that it would supply the company with the needed workforce, regulatory framework and tax regime to ensure that the goals and objectives of the expansion were achieved.
Ugwuanyi reasoned that the achievement recorded by the NB PLC was made possible due to the peaceful operating environment built by his administration in Enugu State.
Dignitaries that witnessed the occasion were MD/CEO Nigerian Breweries PLC, Mr Hans Essaadi; CEO, Heineken, Mr Dolf Van den Brink; CFO, Heineken, Mr Harold Van den Broek; Heineken President for Africa, Middle East and Eastern Europe, Mr Roland Pirmez; captains of industry, traditional rulers, among others.
