Rainfall Wreaks Havoc In Ahoada East
Rainstorm has devastated masts, electrical poles, churches, personal houses as well as deroofed Ahoada East Local Government’s Council Secretariat, Tuesday, at Ahoada the headquarters of the local government.
A two-hour rainfall accompanied by a cyclone pulled down a mast owned by GLOBACOM,a communication network service provider, situated between Ahoada Police officers’ quarters, destroying several buildings and police transmission signal mast near it.
A witness who simply gave his name as Comrade Paul, said although, there was no loss of life, but a man whose name was not clear as at press time, sustained great injury at his head and had been hospitalized.
Our source added that the mast which fell on the roofs top of several buildings, damaged many electrical fixtures and fittings within the police officers’ quarters premises.
However, some boys have been positioned at the gate of the police officers’ quarters blocking people from accessing the scene.
It was also gathered that part of Ahoada Local Government secretariat, Catholic Church, and other personal houses especially at Ubie Street where electrical poles fell down, were also de-roofed by the windstorm.
The Tide learnt that several concrete electric poles along Ahoada-Abua road, Old G.T.C road and other parts of Ahoada were broken down.
It was further gathered that electric cables were massively destroyed, criss-crossing the roads thereby slowing down traffic flow in the area.
Speaking to our correspondent, a resident of the area, Chief Maduka Ikpe Hezekiah, said his phone lost connection immediately the GLO mast fell. He wondered how Ahoada would get electricity within the shortest possible time.
Another resident, Mrs. Chioma Elvis, complained that rainfall this year has being associated with strong wind. She called on Rivers State Government to act fast to check a repeat of such colossal damage in the environment.
Recall that a fortnight ago, a private car skidded and hit a motorcyclist with a passenger into a ditch under construction at Ahoada. The car and the motorcycle which fell into the pit together left the woman passenger with a broken leg.
