PDP Hails Court Ruling Over Stoppage Of PTF Deduction By FG
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rivers State has expressed happiness over the ruling of the Abuja High Court in the suit instituted by the Rivers State Government against the Federal Government over deduction from the Federation Account to fund the Police Trust Fund.
PDP also described the ruling as a clear indication that Governor NyesomWike’s action against the Federal Government was a step in the right direction.
It would be recalled that the governor had approached the court some time ago to seek legal interpretation to the action of the Federal Government authorising direct deduction of the state’smoney from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) to fund the Police Trust Fund, arguing that, since the Nigeria Police Forcewas solely controlled by the Federal Government, it was the responsibility of the Federal Government to fund them, and not the state governments.
The court presided over by Justice Ahmed Mohammed, having considered the suit, declared as unconstitutional Federal Government’s deduction of funds directly from the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee to fund the Nigeria Police Trust Fund.
In a statement, state PDP Publicity Secretary, TambariGbara said, “PDP acknowledges this bold and courageous move as part of Rivers State Government’s efforts to protect the integrity of the state and ensure that it is not short-changed in any way and under any guise.
“The judgement is another testament that the Judiciary can stop impunity and arbitrary actions by governments at all levels, which is the essence of checks and balances in the principle of the rule of law. The Federal Government’s action can best be described as ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’.
“We salute the sagacity of the Abuja High Court in delivering such landmark judgement. Indeed, a ‘Daniel did come to judgement’. We enjoin all judges to be firm, bold, courageous and incorruptible in the delivery of justice, bearing in mind that they are the last hope of ‘the common man’.
“It is also on record that our governor had, in a similar manner, stopped the Federal Inland Revenue Service from collecting taxes meant for the state government. Through these actions, Wike has shown clearly that he is not only a promoter of infrastructural revolution, but also a dogged fighter for the actualisation of a just, equitable and egalitarian society.
“We congratulate Governor NyesomWike for his fearlessness in seeking for justice whenever matters of Rivers interest is threatened or subjugated. We assure you of our total support and backing at all times.
“You have shown capacity as a leader per excellence and a shining example to others of what true leadership connotes. History will not forget you as the story of your giant strides in the state will be better told by generations yet unborn. Thank you for being our liberator, our burden bearer and our hope for a better Rivers State”, he said.
