Cholera Outbreak: Adamawa Confirms 23 Deaths
The Adamawa State Government confirmed, yesterday, that 23 people have so far died as a result of an outbreak of cholera in the state.
The government said the 23 deaths resulted from about 500 suspected cases noted since the outbreak of cholera in the state last month.
The Director of Public Health in the state Ministry of Health, Dr Celine Laori, who made the confirmation, said three local government areas, namely Yola North, Girei and Lamurde are most affected.
“Since the outbreak of the disease in the state in September till date, we have recorded about 500 suspected cases and 23 deaths,” the health official said.
She advised residents to practice basic hygiene and sanitation, and to ensure consumption of only safe food and water.
In a related development, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has intensified a campaign to prevent the spread of cholera and other preventable diseases around the state.
The organisation, which had trained Adamawa-based journalists on risk communication only, last Monday, also involved some journalists, yesterday, in its house-to-house risk communication campaign.
In the campaign, WHO officials and health personnel went from house to house teaching occupants what they must do to prevent attack of cholera and other prevalent diseases, including Covid-19.
An official of the organisation explained in confidence that the disease prevention campaign is being conducted in seven LGAs of the state, noted with high incidences of cholera and other infectious, communicable diseases.
