18 Passengers Escape Death In Boat Mishap
No fewer than 18 passengers on a commercial boat escaped death at the weekend following the malfunctioning of the boat engine mid way to their destination.
The incident occurred in Lagos at about 2pm on Saturday when the passenger boat suddenly stopped after about five minutes into the journey.
The incident caused huge panic amongst the occupants including children as they got stranded in the middle of the river following a heavy downpour.
The Tide learnt that the passenger boat enroute the Five Cowries Terminal, Ikoyi to Badagry developed a fault in the middle of the river amid heavy rainfall with 18 passengers on board.
The passengers were, however, lucky as they were successfully evacuated from the craft unharmed.
When contacted on the incident, Managing Director, Lagos State Water Authority (LASWA), Damilola Emmanuel, said all passengers were saved from drowning.
“No cause for alarm. All passengers have been successfully rescued while the boat moved to safer harbour till the heavy rain stopped and will be taken to dry dock for technical assessment,” he said.
Damilola who declined making the identities of the passengers known, however, said none of them was injured or drowned.
