Industrialist Tasks FG On Protection Of Agro-Allied Industries
An industrialist, Femi Ajanaku has urged the Federal Government not to relent in the protection of local agro-allied industries so as to enhance the nation’s economic development.
He said that the appeal became necessary in view of the likely review of government policies, which may impact negatively on local businesses.
Ajanaku who made the appeal while reacting to the effects of government policies on the economy, told aviation correspondents on Monday that a sustained protection of local industries would attract foreign investment.
According to him, the protection of products like sugar, rice and even cement would be helpful, pointing out that there are some natural resources in the country that really need to be protected.
“The incessant changing of trade policies does not benefit local manufacturers and the economy in the long run. In a situation where you give hope for investment, and remove the lifeline overnight is dangerous to investment and lives.
“If the trend is not changed, it will get to a situation where many people will be more into selling than manufacturing, and subsequently that will lead to high unemployment rate in the country.
“Government should not change policies at random without proper consideration of its negative impact on the economy. If there must be a change, manufacturers and business operators should be given long notice”, he said.
The industrialist also noted that the decision to liberalise the importation of more products could affect the local industry, noting that similar policy is responsible for the inability of Nigerian goods to compete favourably in the international market.
He said that it was unfortunate that Nigeria, in spite of its abundant natural resources, was still depended heavily on importation of products.
According to him, the country can be self-sufficient in rice, sugar, cement and many other products if there is proper protection by the government.
He warned that any attempt not to protect the agro-allied sector would be a disservice to the nation.
