Insecurity: ‘Make Traditional Institution 4th Tier Of Govt’
The Traditional Ruler of Obimo Community in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, Igwe Spencer Ugwuoke, yesterday, called on the Federal Government to make traditional rulers’ institution the 4th tier of government to guarantee adequate security of communities.
The monarch, who said that the traditional rulers were not backed by law to arrest and prosecute criminals in their respective communities, added that community policing through the traditional institution remains the best way to reduce crime to the barest minimum in Nigeria.
He made the call at his palace in Obimo, when he celebrated Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s six years of outstanding performances in rural development and security of lives and property as the governor of Enugu State.
The monarch, who equally inaugurated his Town Union Executives during the event, asked Federal Government to continue paying ex-corps members monthly allowance of, at least, N15,000 until they secure employment, adding that the gesture would also help to reduce crime drastically in the country.
He said, “The traditional rulers’ institution is not captured in our constitution, we are not backed by law to carry out certain functions in our communities. Let there be state police so that the personnel would be recruited from respective communities in our states.
“The traditional rulers know the criminals in their respective communities but they have no power to arrest them.
“The traditional rulers’ institution should be made the 4th tier of government for adequate security of lives and properties in our respective communities.”
While thanking Ugwuanyi for maintaining peace in the state, he said, “Our governor has maintained peaceful atmosphere in the state. This is why I am celebrating him today, begging God to continue guiding him. Let him not look back in the remaining two years of his administration so that his successor may emulate his exemplary leadership qualities. He has equally done well in rural development.”
He charged the newly inaugurated town union executives to contribute meaningfully to community development.
While making his remarks, the President General of the Town Union, Chief Sunday Ezike, pledged to work in harmony with every member of the community, including those that contested the election with him in bringing development projects to the community.
