Some stakeholders in Okuru-Ama Community in the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area have hailed the community for the initiation of a unity festival in the community.
A cross section of stakeholders who spoke to The Tide at the grand finale of the Okuru-Ama Unity Festival 2020 said the festival would also bring unity among the people.
Chairman of Okuru-Ama Community Development, Hon Siyeofori Godpower, told The Tide during the celebration that the festival was to promote unity in the community as well as bring back the age long customs and traditions of the people.
He particularly said the Owoko dance and Iria ceremony which were important aspects of the culture of the people were becoming extinct, hence, the need to revive them.
Hon. Godpower also said the festival was to bring together the various families and interest groups with the view to putting aside their differences and see themselves as one people in the course of the development of Okuru-Ama Community.
He commended the people for their massive turn out in all activities lined up for the festival, promising that this year’s festival will be better than that of last year.
Also speaking, the Head Chief of Okuru War Canoe House, Chief Nyengierefoko Joshua Okuru, said the festival had come to stay as it will be made an annual event.
Chief Okuru said, the festival had brought unity among the people.
He also said, the Owoko dance was one of the most important aspects of the people’s culture, while the Iria was also part of education for potential house wives.
