Ikwerre Economic Summit: Obiri Ikwerre Wears New Look
As preparations for the Ikwerre Economic Summit hits top gear, various groups in the four Ikwerre-speaking Local Government Areas of Rivers State turned out on Saturday to clean up the Obiri Ikwerre located along the East West road.
The Obiri Ikwerre, which is the cultural meeting arena of the Ikwerre Ethnic Nationality had hitherto been over grown by weeds and grasses.
The President of Ogbakor Ikwerre Cultural Organisation, Prof Emenike Wami commended the various organisations and members of the National Union of Ikwerre Students who came out enmass to tidy up the environment and expressed joy that normal activities would soon return to the once abandoned Obiri.
Wami further expressed delight with members of Ikwerre Federated Union (IFU) and the National Union of Ikwerre Students for mobilising their members to keep the area clean but regretted that the area looked deserted as a result of inactivity.
The Ogbakor Ikwerre President explained that any community or organisation that fails to recognise the youths would be far from development and warned the youths, especially students not to involve in activities that may jeopardise their future.
He urged the youths to take their academics seriously and be good followers and ambassadors of Ikwerre land.
Prof Wami urged them to participate actively in their various branches of Ogbakor Ikwerre Cultural Organisation and also, activities and programmes of other well-meaning Ikwerre organisations
The Tide learnt that the exercise was generally successful, even though there were pockets of distraction few days ago from few groups which were against clearing and cleaning of the area.
Also speaking, President of Ikwerre Federated Union, Dr Paul Wowhor expressed satisfaction with the turn out and announced that the clean-up would be done monthly.
He called on the chairmen of all the Ikwerre-speaking Local Government Areas to support the Ogbakor Ikwerre Cultural Organisation in maintaining a clèan and hygienic environment around the Obiri.
Dr Wowhor noted that the Obiri Ikwerre was for all Ikwerre sons and daughters and they should not allow it get dilapidated and unkempt.
Those present at the Obiri Ikwerre for the clean-up exercise included Elder Mike Iwezor, the Chairman of Iwhuruohna Journalists Forum and the Publisher of South-South Voice Newspaper; Dr Paul Wowhor, the President of Ikwerre Federated Union; Mr Prince Ogbonda, the Secretary of IFU and other dignitaries of Ikwerre ethnic extraction.
