Drivers Withdraw Services On Etche Roads, Today
Barring any change in plan, the Professional Drivers Association, Etche Local Government Area chapter in Rivers State has threatened to withdraw from plying the routes in the LG with effect from today, if the federal, state and local government fail to embark on the immediate repair and reconstruction of Igwuruta-Okomoko-Igbodo-Okpala federal road which has become impassable.
The Chief Driver of the association, Anyalebechi Nweke, announced the 72-hour ultimatum to all tiers of government while speaking with journalists after the association’s meeting in Okehi, yesterday.
Our correspondent reports that over 1,000 commuters and road users would be affected as a result of the drivers’ action.
Nweke stated that the deplorable condition of the road has caused untold hardship on members of the association and other road users, adding that the road, which he said, was a gateway to Imo, Abia and other western States, has become a death trap and haven for criminals, who capitalise on its terrible nature to attack motorists and commuters.
According to him, the decision to withdraw their services after the expiration of the ultimatum was designed to draw attention of government at all levels to the plight of Etche people who are the major users of the road.
He disclosed that the portion of road between Okomoko and Chokoche as well as Ulakwo Akwukabi, Okehi and Igbodo were the worst affected.
“Our members will load from Okehi to Port Harcourt, and spend double what they collected from passengers on the road.
“We are noted for agriculture, our people cannot sell their produce because of bad road.
“After the expiration of the notice, we will block the road with our vehicles. Let FARMA and federal, state and local government come and do intervention work on the road now”, he warned.
The chief driver urged the people of Etche communities and other road users to understand and cooperate with the association.
