Poor Road:Community Seeks Wike’s Intervention
The people of Chokota community of Igboh Kingdom in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State have appealed for the intervention of the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, on the deplorable condition of Chokota-Ikwerrengwo- Umuebulu road.
Acting Ochimba of Chokota, Eze Elijah Okere, who made the appeal Monday, in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, said if nothing was done on the road , people and residents of the area stand the risk of being cut off from their neighbouring communities.
The traditional ruler lamented that the road has become so deplorable that people find it extremely difficult to access their neighbouring communities.
He said the road, which terminates at Oyigbo express way, providing a direct link with Port Harcourt, Aba, Imo, has become a daily nightmare because of its present impassable condition.
“ Because of the strategic position, there is in flux of people residing and doing businesses there and large number of civil servants and businessmen who go to work at Port Harcourt on daily basis through the road”, he said.
He contimued that the community has contributed hugely to the national economy but no relevant national agency has considered it appropriate to come to their rescue.
“ We have 42 oilwells, two flow stations, gas gathering plant, natural gas plant, SPDC waste management facility, NNPC manifold, pipelines and several other oil and gas facilities, but in spite of all these, no federal support.
“ The Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike, while commissioning Chokocho-Igboh- Rumukurushi Road, gave us firm promise that he would reconstruct the road when he declared, ‘ Igboh people should go and sleep, the road will be done’.
“ As a Governor that fulfils his promises, we strongly hope that he will fulfil his promise to us by reconstructing the road for us”, he said.
Eze Okere also appealed to the multinational oil companies present in the area and other relevant national agencies to come to their rescue.
