LP Sues For Peaceful Polls In Rivers
The candidate of the Labour Party in the forthcoming 2019 gubernatoral election in Rivers State, Chief Isaac Nwonwu has urged the political class in the state to commit to non-violence before, during and after the elections.
Chief Nwonwu who made the call in an interview with The Tide in his office in Port Harcourt said the attainment of peaceful elections in Rivers State was a collective responsibility of everyone in the state, adding that a conducive atmosphere for free, fair, credible and acceptable election was possible with the active commitment of all political parties and their candidates.
The governorship candidate said that as a political party, the Labour Party has made a decision not only to embark on issue based campaigns but to also ensure that all their supporters carried out their activities lawfully and without resorting to violence.
“As labour party, we are committed and want to be sure that our campaigns will be issue based. We also want to ensure that our supporters carry out our activities within the ambit of the law. We will ensure a non-violent approach”, he said.
According to Chief Nwonwu, “we also appeal to all other political parties to take steps to ensure that we bring about good dividends to the democratic process in the state”.
The Labour party candidate reiterated the need for peace in the state, pointing out that a peaceful environment was a sine quanon for socio-political and economic development of the state by any political party or administration.
“We also appeal to all other political parties to low the same direction in ensuring that there is peace and tranquility in Rivers State and I think that if the state is peaceful, it will benefit everybody and our policy for the development of the state will be more enabling of us when we have a peaceful environment,” he emphasized.
