Council Empowers 50 Farmers In Rivers
Over 50 persons have benefited from the phase one of back to farms programme embarked upon by the Executive Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Hon. Samuel Nwanosike.
The young farmers, last weekend, received empowerment of N50,000 each to support their farming work in the area.
Declaring the progrmame open in Aluu Community in the council chairman said the programme was part of his electioneering campaign promises toward the development of agriculture in the area.
He said the agricultural empowerment programme was arranged in phases to engage the young and the old in farming activities to boost employment and food-production in the area and the state in general.
He said each phase would have its beneficiaries across the 13, wards of the local government area.
“Out of the point which we campaign with is the “Going Back to Farm” progrmame, and I want to tell you that by the grace of God, the committee headed by Mr Prince Nyeche has gone round the 13 wards of Ikwerre Local Government Area, and the committee has captured over 650 persons to be empowered in this phase one.
“The programme would go round all the communities in the LGA and each ward has empowerment of 50 persons for a million naira in a phase.
“This will continue until my tenure will expire, I want to urge all the beneficiaries to make good use of the money to develop agriculture in the little way they can maintain,” he said.
Speaking with The Tide, one of the beneficiaries, Mrs Onyiyenechi Ben, commended the chairman for the gesture, saying that the, money would go a long way to assist her in some of the challenges facing her farming work.
Meanwhile, the chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Hon. Samuel Nwonosike, says all is set for the council to reconnect some Ikwerre communities to national grid.
“Let me also announce to you that plan has been concluded to return back electricity to you.
All the fourteen communities of the Ikwerre Local Government Area would soon have constant light from the national grid.
“The gesture is also part of my electioneering campaign promise to restore the vandalised electricity by some hoodlums from Ahoada area.”

FG, Ogun Distribute Inputs To 2,400 Farmers
Federal Government and the Ogun State Government, on Wednesday, distributed farm inputs to farmers as part of effort to address food security challenge.
The State Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Toyin Ayo-Ajayi, during the flag-off ceremony of Inputs Redemption Under The National Agricultural Growth Scheme-Agro Pocket (NAGS-AP), in Ogun State, disclosed that beneficiaries of the gesture were primarily rice, maize and cassava farmers across the State.
Ayo-Ajayi commended the Ogun State Government for partnering with the government at the centre for the effort in supporting farmers with inputs that would bring about yieldings for local consumption and likely exportation.
She noted that government is supporting rice, cassava and maize farmers with inputs worth N212,000; N189,000 and N186,000 respectively.
The Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs Kehinde Jokotoye, who represented the Commissioner in the Ministry, Bolu Owotomo, stated that traditional farmers are critical in food production, hence the need to encourage and support them with inputs that would bring about desired results during harvesting.
Owotomo said: “Let us make good use of this opportunity, so that the success of this phase will make farmers benefit more from the state and federal governments of Nigeria.”
Earlier, State Coordinator, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Oluwatoyin Ayo-Ajayi, appreciated the present administration for partnering with the federal government for the initiative, adding that the programme is designed to support farmers at the grassroots level in cassava, rice and maize with inputs such as, seeds, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, to boost their production and enhance their livelihood.
