Sanitation: Group Embarks On Voluntary Street Cleaning
An environmental organisation has mobilised its members to support the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) in removing refuse on some streets and drainages in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
The group, Environmental Protection and Educationist Association, while cleaning some streets on the Elekahia axis of Port Harcourt, last Saturday, promised to sustain the gesture on every last Saturday of the month.
Director of the Organization,, Sir Chike Eyindah, in a chat with The Tide, said the group would collaborate with national and state environmental agencies in combating environmental pollution in the state.
Eyindah said, “We want to sustain environmental sanitation practice in Rivers State because we observed that the participation is reducing, and we want to reawaken the consciousness for the people to actually take sanitation services seriously.
“We intend to have collaborations with the federal and Rivers State Ministries of Environment, the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) as well as the Federal Environmental Management Agency (FEMA) and other agencies,” he stressed.
Eyindah further stated that the group’s objective was to ensure drastic reduction of impact of pollution on the environment.
“We want to eradicate air, land and sea pollution to the barest minimum, and to achieve this goal, we will ensure that this programme continues on every monthly sanitation day.
“We will also ensure that the people are educated on how to avoid dropping waste along the road and perhaps make available waste bags for residents to hygienically dispose their waste,” Eyindah explained.
Some residents of Elekahia, who came out for the sanitation, thanked the association for their effort.
