Lions Club Trains 20 Poly Students On Skills
No fewer than 20 students of the Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Rumuola in Port Harcourt have benefitted from a two-day youth empowerment programme organised by Port Harcourt New Garden City Club’s District 404-A2 Nigeria.
The progamme, which held last Friday and Saturday at the polytechnic, trained students on how to make liquid and bar soap, detergents as well as disinfectants.
President of the club, Engr. Iseleye Amachree, said the aim of the programme was to make them entrepreneurs so that by the time they graduate from school, they would have something to depend on instead of applying for white-colar jobs that are hardly there.
Describing Lions Club as the biggest service organisation in the world, Amachree said the empowerment programme was in the spirit of serving the society.
He said the intention was to introduce to the students the need for human beings to give to other people, to reach out to the less privileged and to make the next person smile.
“So, we now introduce them to the attitude of giving right from the school setting so that by the time they are out of school, it becomes a character in them so that they now give freely to society”, he said.
Amachree urged Nigerian students to start thinking of entrepreneurship, stressing that gone were the days when youth graduate from school, apply for white-colar jobs and get employed.
“I’m appealing to students to think more as entrepreneurs, go into farming, go into production of various items, go into ICT while in school. Most of the phones we use are produced by students in China and other Asian countries.
“So, students should think more on skills rather than theoretical. That’s why we have a large pool of unemployed youths roaming the streets”, he stated.
Our correspondent reports that beneficiaries were intending members of Lions Club in the campus.
