RSG Reaffirms Commitment To Peace

The Rivers State Government has reiterated its commitment to ensure that the peace which has currently enveloped Rivers State was maintained.
The state Governor, Chief Nyesom disclosed this during the plenary session of the 37th Annual Synod of Methodist Church of Nigeria, Port Harcourt Diocese at Banham Memorial Methodist Cathedral in Port Harcourt, last Saturday.
Represented by his Deputy, Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo, the governor said peace was an effective ingredient for development to thrive in the state, stressing that “As a government, we have always been committed to ensuring that peace is maintained, but above all, we want to thank the Almighty God for giving us the peace that passes all understanding, the peace that is far above the imagination of our detractors. Rivers State is peaceful, and we give God all the Glory.”
Wike said, “The Rivers people will continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy across the local government areas, in all sectors: education, health, infrastructure roads and everything that positively touches the lives of our people, we know that without good roads, our businesses cannot function, and without peace, our people cannot be happy.”
In his address, the Archbishop of Port Harcourt, Methodist Church Nigeria, Most Rev. Sunday Agwu, urged the people of the state to ensure peace and decorum as they prepare for the 2019 General Elections.
Agwu, who spoke in line with the theme of the synod, “Strive for Peace and Holiness”, charged the people to, “Say no to cultism, violence and kidnapping. Go and register and obtain your permanent voters card, we should have credible, free and fair elections void of rancour and bitterness in rivers State”.
Also speaking, the state Commissioner for Works, Hon Dunamene Deekor expressed the need for the church to play its role in the election of credible leaders, and urged them to ensure that they obtain their Permanent Voter’s Card to perform their civic duties.
Earlier, Prof. Victor Omuaru had delivered a keynote lecture on the theme: “Striving For Peace And Holiness”, which was taken from Hebrews Chapter 12 verse 14.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo says the Wike era was a glorious period for Rivers women.
In a statement in Government House, Port Harcourt, yesterday, Banigo disclosed that the Wike-led government was ready to encourage women to participate actively in the forth coming, June 16, Local Government Council Elections.
“Governor Wike has given Rivers women the opportunity to prove their mettle in politics, by making sure that the nomination forms are free for women.
“He has also expressed his desire to see more women emerge, not just as councillors but as council chairmen and vice. So, the onus is on women with competence, integrity and a burning desires to serve our people to make hay while the sun shines”, Banigo said.
She noted that Wike was the most gender-friendly governor in the annals of the history of the state, and wished the Rivers women success in the forthcoming LG polls.
