Senate Confirms Eight RECs …Rejects One, Defers Three
Following the report of Senator Suleiman Nazif Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the Senate Chambers, yesterday, the Senate has screened and confirmed eight out of the 12 Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) recommended by the committee.
The 12 resident electoral commissioner-nominees include Dr. Mrs. Asmau Sani Maikudi from Katsina; Sam Olugbadebo Olumekun from Ondo; Dr. Mahmuda Isah, representing Kebbi; Amb. Rufus Oloruntoyin from Lagos; and Prof Riskuwa A. Shehu, representing Sokoto.
The rest are Barr. Kasim Gaya Geidam (Yobe); Jibrin Ibrahim Zarewa (Kano); Abdulganiyu Olayinka Raji (Oyo); Prof Samuel God Egwu (Kogi); Barrister Mike Igini (Delta); Prof Mustapha Zubairu (Niger); and Ahmad Bello Mahmud (Zamfara).
During the debate, the Senate observed that four nominees had unresolved issues and were stepped down.
They include that of Lagos State, Dr. Rufus Oloruntoyin, whose confirmation was deferred as a result of court judgement against him while Ahmad Bello Mahmud (Zamfara), and Dr. Mahmuda Isah (Kebbi) were stepped down for further legislative consultation.
However, the Niger State representative, Prof Mustapha Zubairu was out- rightly rejected.
Meanwhile, Senator Biodun Olujimi, who raised objection against the screening of Oloruntoyin, posited that there was a sworn affidavit against him.
She further explained that the nominee appealed against that, but that the appeal was thrown out.
“Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, there was court sworn affidavit against Lagos nominee, and I want to seek the leave of the chambers to step down his screening”, she said.
In his contribution, Senator Olamilekan reminded the chambers that the man was being reappointed based on his track records, canvassing that Senate should not allow pettiness to override serious issues.
“Mr President, distinguished colleagues, I beg you to leave out partisan politics and allow the screening because we are dealing with serious issues here”, Olamilekan said.
Also speaking, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, stated that the chamber cannot overlook the judgement of the court.
Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, advised that the nominee should be referred back to the Committee on INEC.
Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, upheld the decision that only those without encumbrances could be screened which was approved through a voice vote.
