Illegal Trading: RSG To Take Tougher Measures
The Rivers State Ministry of Urban development and Physical Planning has indicated that it would decide to use tougher measures in dislodging traders who have continued to do business along the rail way tracks along the Mile One Market.
This is coming one week after the demolition of shanties and stores at the area and the return of the traders to the market.
The Rivers State Commissioner for urban development and physical planning, Chinyere Igwe in an interview with The Tide Correspondent, said it is surprising that many of the traders have decided to return to the market despite repeated appeals b the state government for them to vacate the area.
He said: “What we are doing is part of the Urban renewal pgorgramme of the state Government. It is a continuous exercise like I have always say and we are not resting but continuing until we get rid Port Harcourt of shanties and restore its lost glory.
People should learn to partner with the Rivers State Government in order to restore the lost glory of Port Harcourt. What we are doing here would improve the serenity, landscape and reduce criminality because this place harboured a lot of criminals in the past”.
Traders along the railway, said they have no alternative than to continue to sell there, while calling on the Rivers State Government to provide them with another place before dislodging them.
One of the traders, Mr. Sunny Nwankwo said: “some of us here are family men and are thrown into confusion, we don’t know where to go, we fell so bad that this thing has to happen, adding that the government was supposed to provide them with alternative places to do their businesses as thousands of people are depending on our businesses
