Ex-Commissioner Hails Rivers Golden Jubilee Celebration
The ongoing 50th anniversary celebration of the creation of Rivers State has been described as a timely intervention that has facilitated the revival of some of the cultures of the people that are going into extinction.
This observation was made by Hon. Charles Beke, a former Commerce and Industry Commissioner in the state who is also a member of the Golden Jubilee celebration planning committee.
Speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt, Prince Charles Beke, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Eastern Wrought Iron Company Limited, said he considered it a great honour to be chosen among the millions of Rivers people to serve in the 150 member Golden Jubilee Planning Committee.
“It is what everyone living that is above 30 should partake because it is not likely that those of us above 30, except by the grace of God will be able to see the centenary celebration of Rivers State.
“So everyone should come to thank God for the glory He has given unto our state to have made it 50, and for us to also recount the achievements recorded in the past 50 years.
“It is also an opportunity to project into where we want our state to be in the next 25 years, with a view to setting up a development plan that will take the state to greater heights based on our experiences”, he elaborated.
Hinting that in the course of planning for the celebration, the Golden Jubilee Committee made startling discoveries of some cultures that are going into extinction like wrestling, saying:. “We are using this Golden Jubilee celebration to revive some of our cultures including wrestling-irrespective of our diversities. Rebirth of wrestling will build bridges across communities and facilitate the return of peace and friendship among Rivers people”.
