Sustainable Tourism, Revenue Spinner – Senator
The Senator representing Rivers East in the National Assembly, George Thompson Sekibo, has described sustainable tourism as a revenue spinner.
Sekibo made this assertion while speaking as chairman of this year’s International Day for Monuments and Sites (IDMs), organised by the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, in Port Harcourt.
The Senator, who was represented by the Federal Commissioner, Public Complaints Commission, Rivers State, Dr Alpheaus Paul-Worika, said, tourism development is a global phenomenon, which defines the economy of some countries.
He said Rivers State has some heritage sites that are globally recognised “and this tells us that our heritage can earn us the much desired foreign exchange”.
The Senator noted sadly that in this part of the world, cultural heritage was only being viewed as just pictures, artifacts and relics and called for a re-appraisal of strategies, especially in this era of economic recession and diversification.
He reasoned that if a nation is to have sustainable cultural tourism, things have to be done differently and tourism, developed as a product.
According to him, “tourism defines the economy of some nations, their main source of income and revenue generation is not in oil, but tourism. “We must therefore begin to view our cultural heritage as a product, a commodity.
We must give sufficient attention to our culture and cultural tourism if we have to continue to expand the frontiers of our economy”.
The Senator commended the Rivers State Government for repackaging the state’s annual cultural festival, which he described as fast dying.
The curator of National Museum, Port Harcourt, Mr Fadamijo Omolayole, in his welcome address, described Nigeria as a nation blessed with spectacular landmarks, monuments and sites, which he said can form the nucleus of concerted drive towards sustainable tourism and economic development.
Speaking on the theme, Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Tourism in Nigeria, Director of Student Affairs, Port Harcourt Polytechnic, Dr Chinogonum Chuku, called for partnership in the development of sustainable tourism in the state, while Royal Father of the Day, HRH T.J.T. Princewill, Amachree X1, Amanyanabo and Natural Ruler of Kalabari Kingdom, called for a reintroduction of local languages in schools.
