A Note On Religion

This piece is inspired by two issues raised by a young
man of God who, though he thinks my ideas on religion are outlandish or even blasphemous, prods me periodically and listens with rapt attention as I utter what he considers the unthinkable and bare my heart on the generally emotionally charged topic of religion
The first issue is; “We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another.”
The second issue: “Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction.”
In my opinion, those are two very apt assessments of the sad effect of organized religion on the psyche of humanity and the manifest aberrant behaviours. In response to the two subjects above, I succinctly offered that it is a result of zealotry and expatiated as follows:
Regarding the first issue, I think that out of blind and brainless zealotry, people apply their limited understanding of religious injunctions to the erroneous theological differences amongst the various religious groups based on warped perceptions. Meanwhile, the true search for the face of God is universal—as it is here on earth so it is in the innumerable mansions in our Father’s House.
A worrisome number of clergies of every religious persuasion conscientiously and consistently exploit this utter ignorance on the part of the laity for the purposes of keeping the flock in place and furthering their pecuniary benefits and those of the totality of the humongous, complex and top-heavy structure of the religious organizations. Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, in his legendary musical militancy, sang of this.
The permissive philosophy of divine forgiveness of sins, which is at variance with the core of Jesus’ teachings, and the utterly disgraceful emphasis on prosperity as against salvation through keeping the statutes of God have derailed humanity from the noble path of Buddhism, the narrow way of Christianity and the noble way of Islam; this is especially so in Christendom.
Note that though Buddha predated Jesus by more than five centuries and Mohammad came after Jesus with a similar gap; there is an instructive commonality in the keystones of their ministries. An incisive reading of their works shows numerous commonalities in the fundamental tenets of their preaching; yet the warped interpretation of their works by zealots has set humanity in disarray.
On the second issue, zealots across the multiplicity of religious hedgerows that generously punctuate the spiritual landscape of planet earth commit heinous acts and crimes believing those to be in the service of God; unfortunately, they do not realize the falsehood of their understanding of the tenets of religion and the wrath of God that awaits them on account of those acts of crass fanaticism.
For instance, in some churches in Christendom, clergy and laity collectively pray for the misfortune and even death of perceived enemies; this is clearly indicative of utter ignorance of the essence of Jesus’ ministry, which is hinged on forgiveness.
In Islam, the religion of peace, zealots, in their warped understanding of the essence of The Noble Qur’an, kill in the name of Allah and this has produced Boko Haram, the reduction of Aleppo and a few other cities in the Middle East to concrete rubbles and a global refugee crisis of unimaginable proportion.
Undoubtedly, humanity will only be liberated from the intellectually numbing and anesthetizing effects of the ossified creeds of organized religion once people learn to read the scriptures with their God-given intellect switched on.
Jesus admonished thus: “seek and ye shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you; ask and ye shall be given.” In other words, he challenged us to acquire knowledge. It is only when we obey this instruction that we shall understand the “dark sayings” (metaphors, allegories and parables)in the Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Songs of Solomon and other books of the Bible. Similar teachings are also abundant in the scriptures of other religions.
Again, St. Paul warned and taught thus: “Be not deceived; for whatsoever a man soweth so shall he also reap.” This is an immutable spiritual law that applies to humanity evenhandedly irrespective of status, station, location, breed or creed. So I ask: where is the scriptural source of the touted vicarious remission of sins?
Religion, as it is currently practiced especially in Nigeria, is residual superstition that is driven and sustained by insecurity and poverty-induced neurosis.
Let me conclude by unreservedly stating that the greatest hoaxes in humanity are imbedded in the concretes of the towers and domes of organized religion. This is the reason Karl Marx referred to religion as “opium of the masses”.
The greatest spiritual tenet is that which tells us to love our neighbours as ourselves. Anybody who imbibes this ultimate divine statute, which is the utmost moderator of human behaviour, will not exploit and/or harass students, cheat people, pilfer public funds or behave in any of the numerous other ways that create disharmony and conflict in society and lead to the failure of the system in providing social amenities and infrastructure for good governance.
Once our leaders perform their duties with love, then humanity will be on its path to St. Augustine of Hippo’s “City of God”—a domain devoid of greed, corruption and economic, political and religious oppression.

Balancing Religious Freedom and Community Rights
