Rivers First Lady Tasks African Women Groups On Gender Bills
Wife of the Rivers State
Governor, Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike, has called on African women groups to network with a view to sponsoring bills that will address emerging challenges that confront women and children.
Speaking at the Government House, Port Harcourt when she granted audience to the African Women Lawyers Association, Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike noted that the challenges faced by women and children in Africa evolved on a regular basis, hence the need for appropriate legislations to tackle them.
She noted that some countries in Africa were still backward in terms of the promotion of women and children rights, pointing out that a coordinated approach would resolve such issues.
According to her, no single group will effectively address the challenges that have impeded the promotion of women and children rights.
“The time has come for African women to look towards moving things forward for ourselves. We have done well for ourselves, but there is still much to do.
“I have passion for issues that concern women and children. We shall continue to work with groups to promote the rights of women and children “
“ We should come together to sponsor bills in our various parliaments , so that we can get legislations that promote the rights of women and children “.
Earlier, President of the African Women Lawyers Association, Mrs Mandy Demechi Asagba commended Justice Nyesom-Wike for her passion for issues that affect women and children.
She said that the African society had peculiar challenges that hindered the development of women, adding that African Women Lawyers Association was pursuing goals that will improve the living condition of women.
The group solicited the support of the Wife of the Rivers State Governor to help them actualise their objectives.
Highpoint of the visit was the investiture of Justice Nyesom-Wike as the Matron of the African Women Lawyers Association.
