Cultists Ravage Etche Community
The burial ceremony of El
der James Nwogu, who was until his death, the most elderly man in Okudu Mba in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State turned bloody as alleged cultists ravaged the community.
The Tide gathered that scores of people were wounded as the natives scampered for safety while the cultists had their field day.
Our source who was in the ceremony said problem started when one of the cult groups started breaking bottles at one of the beer parlors in the area and when some youths sought to intervene in the fracas, cultists wielding knives and guns began to beat up and shoot in the making the people in the burial ground to flee for safety.
About 27 persons were said to have sustained serious injuries while those in critical condition were taken to nearby clinics for treatment.
Our source who pleaded anonymity expressed dismay at the high level of cult activities in the area, particularly at this period the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike had declared total war against cultism in the state.
According to The Tide sources, inhabitants of the area live in fear as cultists break homes stealing on daily basis.
“Sometimes, they even steal with guns in the daytime and community people dare not question them for fear of their lives.
He urged the state governor to dispatch anti-robbery squad to the area to save the lives of law-abiding indigenes of the community.
“The armed youths break stores, homes and cart away people’s belongings including domestic animals”, he said.
