Professor Emeritus, Otonti
Nduka has called on Journalists in Nigeria to hold government accountable for its actions, if the nation must develop.
Nduka, who stated this at a Press briefing in Port Harcourt to announce a proposed national conference, said Journalists being the Fourth Estate of the Realm were better placed not only to educate but also propagate solutions to Nigeria’s problems.
“This they can do by placing key issues on the front-burner of public discourse. When this is done, it draws not only the attention of government, but also of the populace, who would now join in the agitations”, he said.
Professor Nduaka, who “is the founder of the Otonti Nduka Foundation for Values, Education”, said it is in this wise that the foundation is billed to hold a national conference on “Corruption, Democracy and National Development”.
According to him, various Nigerian leaders have since independence in 1960, made attempts to develop the country with little success.
“Since our attainment of political independence in October, 1960, Nigerians have been making valiant but largely ineffective attempts to develop our nation into a modern, efficient, democratic, humane, scientifically-oriented and technological society”.
“But that it has been observed that most of the steps and measures taken have been ad hoc and therapeutic and have been aimed at restoring the health of one or more aspect of an ailing body politic, hence the re-occurance of the idea of a war against x, y or z, he said.
He explained that in a bid to change the approach the foundation came up with twin purposes aimed at contributing to the development of the country.
“The purposes are to revitalize the moral fibre of all segments of the Nigerian Society through the enunciation, propagation and inculcation of appropriate, positive values and to sustain the moral and ethnical vitality of the nation through research and the dissemination of the research findings through publications, lectures, workshops, seminars, public enlightenment campaigns, etc.
The conference, which is billed to hold from May 9-10, 2016 is organised in collaboration with the Nigerian Academy of Education.
