Marine Police Allegedly Shoot, Kill Fisherman
There was
pandemonium in Belema Ama fishing settlement, an outpost of Isaka Community in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State as Marine Police Patrol team allegedly shot and killed a fisherman.
A source told The Tide Correspondent that the fisherman, Obediah Gabriel (62), from Andoni in Andoni Local government Area met his untimely death while he was bathing after coming back from fishing at the waterside.
The source said the flying bullet hit the deceased at his right laps close to his manhood.
It was also learnt that the incidence occurred as a result of the Marine Police Patrol team trying to manoeuvre their way to arrest a boat suspected to have carried out illegal bunkering activities within the area.
According to a source, the Marine Police while pursuing the illegal bunkerers released a shot which incidentally hit the fisherman.
Although when the incidence occurred, the residents of Belema Ama wanted to react, but were advised to report it formally to the appropriate authorities rather than taking the laws into their hands.
It was gathered that the family members of the deceased have also taken the incidence lightly, since it was not intentional while burial arrangements are ongoing.
When contacted, the Chairman, Isaka Community Development Committee (CDC), Tamunoigheinbia Reuben James confirmed the incidence and disclosed that the issue was being amicably handled as it was not a deliberate act by the Police.
In his reaction, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ahmad Kidaya Muhammed said he was yet to get such information but promised to contact the Division.
