Delta Speaker Warns Traffic Officers

The Prime Minister (Iyase) of the Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe (6th left), the Oracle (Esogban) of Benin, Chief David Edebiri (7th left), and other chiefs, at the official announcement of the demise of the Oba of Benin, Oba Erediauwa, Omo N’Oba N’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, at Ugha-Ozolua in Benin City last Friday.
The Speaker, Delta State
House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Monday Igbuya has recounted the trauma he had to go through in major roads in Asaba and Warri, urging officers of the Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA) to restore sanity and ensure the free flow of traffic on Delta roads at all times.
He also urged DESTMA officials not to engage in illicit and compromising activities.
Igbuya said drastic measures would be applied to any DESTMA officer found to be engaged in corruption.
The Speaker gave the warning in Asaba while responding to the speech of the Delta State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Vincent Uduaghan, who led officers of his ministry on a courtesy call on the Speaker in his office.
He said indiscipline and corruption were responsible for the poor performance of some police and Federal Road Safety Corps officers in the country.
“The law establishing DESTMA was a product of the 5th Assembly. DESTMA was put in place to complement the Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) as it affects safety on our roads”.
Specifically, Igbuya said DESTMA was not established only to generate revenue.
“It is to inculcate discipline, safety consciousness and to checkmate the excesses of road users, particularly motorists”.
He urged DESTMA officials not to worry about the prospect of their career.
‘One of you can be head of the organization in future. The sky is your limit. You must be good ambassadors. There should be no special preference in the course of carrying out your duties. The law must be applied to all, irrespective of status. Do not compromise your uniform.
”You must show good examples” he said.
