Group Wants Buhari To Exercise Power With Caution
The Coalition of Civil
Society Groups in Rivers State has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to exercise power with caution so as not to endanger the nation’s nascent democracy.
The group which said this at a press briefing in Port Harcourt, also condemned the invasion of the country home of an ex-militant leader in Ogoni Chief Siyomon Ndigbara and the Asari Toru Local Government Council by soldiers.
It also demanded the immediate release of Nnamdi Kalu of Iindigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and Col Sambo Dasuki from prison custody in accordance with the pronouncement of the courts.
The text for the briefing which was read by Barrister N.N. Ndazigba-Lue said that the group watched with trepidation and disbelief the resurgence of executive lawlessness, impurity and total disregard for the rule of law in the country.
“We had thought that the gospel of change of the present federal government will erase the bitter memories of the military invasion of Ogoniland, Odi Massacre to mention but a few.
“While we support every legal means to sanitise the very corrupt Nigerian society, we hasten to condemn in the very strongest terms the recourse to self help, disregard for the rule of law and disobedience to court orders by the present federal government”, it said.
The group also urged the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to come to Rivers State with a view to assessing the extent of damage at the residencesof the ex-militant leader, Solomon Ndigbara and at the official residence of the caretaker committee chairman of Asari Toru Local Government Council in Buguma.
The organisation also called on politicians from the various political divides to be mindful of the enormous sacrifices made by the civil society organisations so as not to push Nigeria further to the brink.
