Traders Defy Council’s Order On Trading In Motorpark
Inspite of the order given
by the caretaker chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Sir Sonny Ejekwu to petty-traders, particularly those that trade on perishable goods and agricultural products rather than decrease, have remained on the increase at the motor park.
The area grossly affected with the trading activities in the park is the Rumudi-Ndele and Ibaa line as well as the Etche and Woima line where agricultural produce from the rural areas were heaped and have taken over the parking spaces for transport vehicles operations.
But drivers are not happy that trading activities at the park have affected their packing spaces; a situation that has keep their vehicles out of business since no space to offload.
In an interview with The Tide, the Chief driver of the Ibaa/Ndele Rumuji, Mr. Oduchi Elem said that are becoming helpless with the situation, inspite of council’s order.
According to him, the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) supposed to tackle the matter has not taken tangible step to stop the trading.
He said if steps are not taken to address the matter, drivers would be forced to carryout protests and demonstrate over the unpalatable situation at the park.
However, one of the traders Mrs Cecelia Nna that spoke on the matter explained that they do not have an alternative place to trade, particularly now that the Christmas season sales is on.
