Experts Advocate Tree Planting Campaign In Nigeria
An expert on
biodiversity conservation Dr Mathew Dore and a Consultant OrthopAedic surgeon, Dr Wakeel Lawal have advocated for more awareness on tree planting in Nigeria.
The duo who spoke to newsmen on separate interviews stressed the need for Nigerians to imbibe tree planting habit with the view to checking the effect of erosion in the country.
Speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt, Dr Matthew Dore who is also the national coordinator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) sponsored Niger Delta Biodiversity project said that tree planting has become very necessary especially in the Niger Delta to protect the environment from destruction.
He said that the UNDP is not only encouraging tree planting exercise among Niger Delta communities, but would ensure that both the forests and riversides are kept clean always.
Dr Dore also warned against indiscriminate dumping of wastes in the rivers as well as the killing of endangered animal species for food.
According to him, as part of the conservation programme, the UNDP would support every efforts by communities across the region towards tree planting exercise.
On his part, Dr Wakeel Lawal urged Nigerians to imbibe the habit of tree planting around their vicinities. Dr Wakeel who is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the National Orthopaedic Centre, Lagos, said that trees have both economic, social and health benefits to human existence and the society at large.
He said that from trees, people can harvest fruits and sell inorder to make money thus providing income.
“Small business opportunities in green waste management and land scaping arise when cities value mulching and its water saving qualities.
“Vocational training for youth interested in green jobs is also a great way to develop economic being from ultra violet rays,” he said.
He also listed other benefits of trees to the environment to include; combating climate change through the absorption of millions of released by smoky cars.
