The Rivers State
Government has been urged to prevail on commercial bus operators in order not to increase transportation fare this Yuletide celebration.
The Managing Director, Rigour Edge Consultant, Maduwachi Igwe, who spoke with newsmen Monday, in Port Harcourt, said if the government did not intervene in time, bus operators may take undue advantage of the season.
He said over the years, motorists have capitalized on the season and arbitrarily increased transportation fare.
Igwe maintained that commercial bus operators ought to be monitored by government officials every yuletide seasons as to regulate fare.
According to him, festive season such as Christmas need some special transportation scheme that will enable holiday makers to travel with ease.
He regretted that motorists in the state are not sensitive to commuters’ plight, saying that they must plan towards rendering better service.
In his response, Mr Iyke Ojiegbe, said government must first and foremost monitor the sales of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), if it must intervene in the business of regulating transportation fare.
He said it would not be proper for a motorist to buy petrol far above the normal pump price and still operate at the old rate.
Ojiegbe, explained that commercial bus operators are like any other businessman that is after profit making.
He has also called on the bus/cab operators in the state to handle their business with a human face.
He hinted that in most parts of the country, their fares are somehow fixed, saying that in Rivers State, transportation fare are fixed at will.
Meanwhile, he has applauded the Governor, Chief Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, over his support for the commissioning of the Railway Line, as he urged businessmen to make use of the system for cheaper transportation fare.
