Health: Rivers NMA Urges Increased Budgetary Allocation
The Nigerian Medical Association has called on the Rivers State government to increase budgetary allocation on health, if significant gains are to be achieved and basic obligations met. The chairman of Rivers NMA, Dr Furo Green, at a press briefing in Port Harcourt said they are currently on a 1.25% budget scale. He lamented the neglect of the health sector by the government stressing the need to increase health budget to about 10%.
Green however noted that government at both the Federal and state levels are beginning to pay more attention to internally generated revenue.
“While the agency in the state pursues this goal, it should be remembered that privately-owned health facilities cater for about 65% of the health care need of Rivers people” he said, hence the need to tax such private health institutions with human face.
“Majority of these private hospitals do not have enough money to pay for necessities. They therefore complement government at very huge costs,” he added.
The chairman also said Rivers NMA would not welcome any free medical prouncement without any adequate financial backup.
According to him, the previous administration in the state could not meet up with the financial requirement for the free medical treatment for the free medical treatment carried out in the state, resulting in clogs in the medical sector. Also speaking, the treasurer of NMA in the State, Dr Mina Whyte, called on Non-governmental organizations and government to help eradicate measles in the country.
