UNILAG Students Protest Death Of Colleague
The Students’ Union President, University of Lagos, Mr Abiodun Martins, has called on the management of the institution to be more proactive in catering for the welfare of the students.
Martins made the call when he led an in- house protest by students of the institution over the death of one of their colleagues, Miss Oluchi Anekwe.
Anekwe, a 300 level student of Accounting, was said to have been electrocuted in the early hours of Wednesday on the campus.
It was gathered that Anekwe was electrocuted when a high tension cable near her hostel cut and dropped on her.
She was close to getting into her hostel at the Sodeinde Residence at New Hall, when the incident occurred.
Anekwe was said to have been rushed to the school’s clinic where a medical staff was said to have demanded for her identity card rather than attend to the dying student immediately.
According to Martins, such deaths would have been avoided if management had considered the welfare of students, especially those on campus, as a top priority.
He regretted the incident adding that there was need for management to swing into action immediately in a bid to repair and possibly reconstruct every infrastructure on campus.
All academic and social activities around the campus was brought to a halt by the aggrieved students as a mark of honour to the departed soul.
One of the students, Miss Tessy Thomas, said that management was not responsive enough in tackling issues that bordered on the welfare of the students.
According to her, residents of the hostel had been calling the attention of the university authority to the numerous exposed cables that pose a threat to lives of persons in the campus but to no avail.
Addressing the students, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon Bello, pleaded with them to remain calm as he shared in their grief.
He said that management had tried severally to draw the attention of the relevant electricity distribution company who was responsible of maintaining the infrastructure.
“I want to appeal with you to remain calm over the death of one of us, as we equally shared in your grief.
“We feel pained at the incident and we pray that such will never occur again.
“We indeed regret the entire development even as I plead with you to join hands with me to tackle this issue immediately.
“We shall be setting a day aside to pray for the departed soul as we ask God to give the entire community and the family of the deceased the fortitude to bear the loss,’’ he said.
The River State Commissioner for Education, Dr Peters Nwagor has called on media practitioners in Rivers State to deploy their various communication platforms toward promoting government programmes and policies aimed at achieving sustainable development in the education sector. Dr. Nwagor made the appeal when members of the Etche Ethnic Practicing Journalists (EEPJ) paid him a courtesy visit in Office in Port Harcourt. The Commissioner emphasized the strategic role of the media in shaping public perception, promoting government initiatives, and supporting policies capable of improving the quality of education and human capital development in the state.
