FRSC Blames Road Accidents On Brake Failure
The Federal Road Safety
Commission (FRSC) has identified brake failure as the major cause of road crashes involving articulated vehicles.
The Director in charge of Commands, Administration and Strategy, National Headquarters, Abuja, Mr Augustine Aipoh, said this at the inauguration of ‘Operation scorpion 4 ‘in Awka yesterday.
Aipoh said the exercise was a continuation of the road safety compliance enforcement on heavy duty drivers which began after extensive consultation between the FRSC and road transport operators.
He said most motorists did not have valid drivers’ licence and advised them to go to the FRSC office in person to obtain them because “proxy’’ registration was illegal.
“We discover that some of them have this problem of not having drivers’ licence, the vehicles are not road worthy, and after much dialogue we decided that we have to go into full enforcement.
“Most of the accidents like the one that happened in Onitsha are as a result of brake failure,’’ he said.
He reiterated that nobody would be issued driver’s licence by proxy, adding that an applicant must be physically captured in person before the issuance of temporary licence.
On his part, Mr Sunday Ajayi, Sector Commander in Anambra said most of offences identified during the exercise, include tyre violation, use of fog light at night, inadequate or non-possession of spare tyre.
Ajayi said the commission would continue to work in the best interest of road users, and urged the public to comply with standard rules of road safety.
