NDLEA Convicts 37 In C’River
The National Drugs
Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Cross River State, says it has convicted 37 persons for drug related offences in the state in the last one year.
State NDLEA Commander, Mrs. Anthonia Edeh, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Calabar as part of activities to mark the 2015 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit trafficking.
“Due to our intelligence led investigation and diligent prosecution of cases, we secured 37 convictions at the Federal High Court in respect with drug offences,” she said.
Edeh explained that the agency, within the period under review arrested 185 suspects with drug exhibit totaling 1,381.706kg (1.4 tones) which included cannabis sativa 6.4035kg and 18 grammes of heroin.
“The drugs seized have a street value of N116, 163,300. The breakdown of the arrested suspects show that 175 were males while 10 were females,” she said.
The NDLEA boss also revealed that 4.741 acres of cannabis sativa farmlands with a street value of over N70 million were discovered and destroyed at Abijan in Etung local government area of the state.
She stated that the agency counseled and sensitized seventy drug dependent persons while nine referrals were fully rehabilitated and reintegrated back to their families, just as members of the public were sensitized through lectures, seminars and workshops on the dangers of illicit drug consumption and trafficking.
