About one week ago, Nigeria’s Un
der-20 Male Football Team, the
Flying Eagles edged the Young Lions of Senegal 1-0 in a tight final match in Dakar, Senegal to lift the 2015 African Youth Championship (AYC) trophy. It was the 19th edition of the championship.
The feat was the seventh a Nigerian Youth team would be finishing tops having won in 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989 and 2005 to rule Africa. The success underlines the potentials that abound in Nigeria and the fact that commitment backed with good preparation will always lead to the realization of positive dreams.
Also, the Victorious Flying Eagles comprised of about 80 per cent of the 2013 World Cup winning Golden Eaglets and the technical crew led by Coach Manu Garba: A clear vote for continuity and good planning.
The Tide joins millions of other well-meaning Nigerians to salute the Flying Eagles for this glorious feat, especially, for going through the championship unbeaten. That they were deserving champions cannot be overemphasized.
Indeed, these young men and their technical crew have brought honour and pride to their fatherland and once again raised the hunger and expectation for a similar performance at the global stage.
While we commend the team for yet again conquering Africa and demonstrating the potentials inherent in Nigeria, we urge them not to rest on their oars. Now, is certainly the time for them to rise, fly and conquer the world.
In a couple of weeks, the Flying Eagles will go up against the rest of the world in the 2015 FIFA Under-20 World Youth Championship, WYC, scheduled for New Zealand. Tough Group matches await them as they face five time winner, Brazil as well as North Korea and Hungary in Group E.
This is why the team must be in the best shape possible for the World Championships. While Nigeria has established firm dominance at this level of soccer in Africa, it has failed to lift the trophy at the world stage, the best being a losing finalist in 1989 and 2005.
Given the performances and form of the present team that just concluded the championship in Senegal, Nigeria can actually make history in New Zealand by going all the way to the world title, and becoming the first to win the AYC and WYC in the same year.
In order to achieve this however, The Tide believes that the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Flying Eagles Coaches and the players must be on the same page as far as preparations, logistics and mission objectives are concerned.
The authorities must begin preparation for the global encounter by arranging Grade ‘A’ friendlies and ensuring that the players are motivated for the world tourney. It is time for Nigeria to claim its place among the best in world youth soccer.
Moreso, everything needed to make the team stronger, especially, funding, taking care of issues that could serve as distractions and injecting more top class players, should be done before hand to put the Flying Eagles in good stead for the forthcoming world challenge.
