NIOMR Acquires N1.5bn Fishing Vessel
Executive Director, Nigerian Institute of Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR), Dr Gbola Akande, has said the institution had taken delivery of a N1.5 billion vessel from the Federal Government.
He told newsmen in Lagos that the vessel, RV Diagonal, would assist the institution to boost local production and reduce importation of fishes and other sea foods.
“The Federal Government’s commitment to the provision of food security informed the investment of this magnitude.
“Our area of payback, as a research institute, is for us to target our untapped aqua resources for the benefit of the nation.
“We are focusing on fishes and sea foods as import substitutions to the widely consumed frozen fishes in Nigeria.
“The vessel is capable of harvesting 70 tonnes of fishes and other sea foods in the 200nautical miles exclusive economic zone of our high sea,” he told reporters.
The director also said that various researches by the institute had shown that Nigeria was blessed with many fish species such Areoma-Bondi and Tuna.
“We have conducted many researches on these two fishes and the Lantern Fish.
“These researches have shown that we can harvest 10,000 tonnes of Tuna per year without depleting the available stock in our seas,” he said.
Akande also said that the new vessel would engage in deep, middle and top sea fishing.
He noted that many fishing companies folded up because they focused mainly on 50 meters offshore fishing.
“We had about 200 fishing trawlers in the country but many of them have gone out of business because our fishermen have almost depleted the top sea fishes.
“We got the vessel in October 2014 but went on high sea about two weeks ago to harvest fishes, lobsters, shrimps and other sea foods,” Akande said.
He assured that the vessel would be sustained through Public Private Partnership agreements and collaborations.
“The vessel’s primary assignments are research and training but it is also equipped with facilities that can service oil companies.
“We have been consulting with private sectors and some of them have shown interests to partner with us.
“The maintenance is cumbersome for an agency like ours because the vessel is powered by 120,000 litres of diesel for a full tank,” he said.
