The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 6, Tunde Ogunsakin has called on all political gladiators in Rivers State to play the game according to the rules Electoral Acts as they go about their electioneering campaigns during and after the general elections in the state.
Ogunsakin gave this advice during a sensitization and signing of Peace Accord by all the political parties in the state held prior to the elections in the state at the Police Officers’ Mess, Old GRA, Port Harcourt, yesterday.
He stated that the aim of the meeting was to interface with all the politicians in the state on the need to have peaceful and successful elections in the state, adding that it was strategic to the country’s economic development.
According to him, it was due to some negative news about political violence happening in the state that the Inspector-General of Police directed him to relocate to the state to ensure a peaceful election in the state, noting that Rivers people were noted for their peaceful nature.
“There is no need for electoral violence in the state, we should live like family; elections must not be seen as a do or die off air If you lose today, you may win tomorrow. That is the beauty of democracy”, he stated.
He used the opportunity to warn politicians that the police in the state will deal with anyone found violating electoral laws irrespective of the political party he or she belongs, adding that the police will not compromise in its duties during and after the elections.
He told the gathering that he had constituted a committee that will deal with electoral violence in the zone, adding that the zone has taken over all the investigations of electoral violence in the state.
“I have also directed all the Commissioners of Police in Rivers, Ebonyi, Cross River and Akwa-Ibom to do same, stop and search all vehicles to ensure that all illegal arms are recovered. We must have a peaceful election in the stat.
“I will not condole any act of irresponsibility from the politicians that would cause a breach of peace in the state during and after the elections. We shall be objective in our dealings as we are no allegiance to any of the political parties”, he stated.
Also speaking, the state Commissioner of Police, now transferred to Anambra State, Dan Bature, lauded the AIG for programme, adding that such underscored the seriousness the police attach to the upcoming elections across the country.
He averred that the election is crucial as the whole world is looking up to the country, and urged the politicians to join hands with the security operatives to prove the country’s detractors wrong.
In her speech, the state INEC Resident Commissioner, Mrs Desila Khan said the gesture shows the commitment of the police towards a successful election in the state, and thanked them for such partnership, adding that the commission was ready for the elections.
