2015: Group Wants 35% For Women
The Centre for Environ
ment Human Rights and Development (CEHRD) has called for adherence to the 35 percent affirmative action for women participation in politics by all political parties.
The programme Director of the Centre, Mr. Steve Obodoekwe who said this at a two-day advocacy training on increasing women participation in governance organised by the Centre in partnership with Irish Embassy at Marine Base, Port Harcourt also urged the women to mobilize their members to participate in the on-going political process.
Mr. Obodoekwe stressed the need for them to see themselves as agents of change as their activities could lead to increase in women participation in governance.
“There is need to change in the perception and the network will play a big role in changing the perception” he said.
The programme Director further enjoined them to apply the advocacy skills they had acquired while carrying out advocacy visits to stakeholders to canvas for more women participation in politics and commended the male members of the network for their support.
Also speaking, the facilitator of the programme Eucharia Okonkwo said that the programme which had as its theme: Integrated Response on Increase in Women Participation in Governance in Rivers State was aimed at increasing women participation in governance and community decision making.
