Still On Violence-Free Polls

As February 14, 2015
draws nigh, there are insinuations that the day will be striped off of its colours of love that usually characterize the atmosphere, leaving the populace think and talk nothing but love.
From the foregoing, it might not be very easy for any sane mind to contemplate a visit to the beach, the cinema or other relaxation outlets all for warm, affectionate momentary bonding with loved ones come February 14,2015.
The reason for downplaying on the euphoria of the so-called lovers day is simple, not because it is the presidential election day No! It is rather because the polity is being heated up daily, by politicians and their cohorts who consider politics a do-or-die affair and would stop at nothing in making sure they and their candidates emerge winners of the forth-coming elections.
A report by an election assessment team, organised by the National Democratic Institute and International Republican Institute, said there were wide spread doubt among Nigerians about the election’s integrity.
From the political drumbeat, any neutral professional singer or dancer would attest to the fact that there is no correlation between the music and the dance steps because of the discordant drumbeat. Dancers down the ladder can no longer go by the lyrics and rythms of the political singers at the top because handlers of the drums and musical instruments have decided to play and beat off keys. The result is no longer political music but political violence and catastrophe.
Of course, we need not live in the era of King Nebuchadnezar and Daniel of the Bible stories to be able to read or notice the handwriting on the wall. Those at the sideline as well as watchers and followers of events around the globe are already seeing the smoke, which means an eventual fire outbreak is imminent if nothing is done to forestall it.
In line with this, the U.S Secretary of States, John Kerry arrived Nigeria few days back, urging rival political camps and politicians to respect the outcome of the February 14, presidential election, amid concerns that post-poll violence could undermine the fight against Boko Haram insurgents.
Kerry’s concern was to emphasise to both presidential candidates of the two major contending parties, the importance of non-violence in the forth-coming election as well as having a free, fair and transparent process.
For Kerry, it is particularly needful that the loser accepts the result and discourages his supporters from responding in any violent fashion. Although the 2011 poll was widely seen as successful, post-poll violence led to more than 800 deaths as reported by the election assessment team. The US has the feeling that there is a propensity for such violence to erupt hence the need to get ahead of it.
Luckily, before the visit of the US Secretary of States, John Kerry, President Goodluck Jonathan, former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), and 12 other presidential candidates had already signed an undertaking to ensure free and fair polls as well as run issue-based campaigns for the forthcoming general elections in the country.
The peace agreement otherwise known as “Abuja Accord” by the organisers of the event, essentially barred the contestants from making inciting speeches in whatever guise that could cause the eruption of violence before, during and after the election.
For a people desirous of taking proactive measures to prevent electoral violence before, during and after the elections. The public expects a higher degree of anxiety towards the maintenance of a peaceful environment for the 2015 general elections. It expects an overt reaffirmation of commitment to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which stands for the sustenance and promotion of the unity and corporate existence of Nigeria as an indivisible entity, determined to avoid any conduct or behaviour capable of endangering its political stability and national security while placing national interest above personal and partisan concerns.
The citizenry also expects every signatory to the ‘Abuja Accord’ to fully abide by all rules and regulations as laid down in the legal framework for elections in Nigeria.
As concerned elder statement pointed out during the sensitisation workshop that gave birth to the ‘Abuja Accord’, a little attempt to tame the tongue and curtail the use of provocative languages while majoring on issue-based campaigns, party policies and ideologies will go a long way in checking this enigma called electoral violence.
Unfortunately from the day of signing this peace accord, some politicians and their supporters seemed to have forgotten in a hurry the implication of the accord they have entered into. Provocative languages are being used without caution. This is just before the election, when fates are not yet decided. How it will look like during and after the 2015 general elections remains a puzzle only you and I can solve.
While the technical competence of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the disposition of the security personnel whose role is outrightly to facilitate and the maturity of the contestants themselves will go a long way in ensuring violent-free polls. We must realise that the entire world beams its searchlight now on Nigeria, hence, nothing less than a proof of Nigeria’s big brother position in Africa and beyond through this election is expected.
