NDE Trains 100,000 Edo Youth
The Coordinator of the
National Directorate of Employment (NDE) in Edo State, Mrs Ayo Edegbai, has said that the directorate had trained and empowered no fewer than 100,000 youths.
Edegbai made the disclosure at the graduation ceremony for the youths, held at Ikabigbo in the Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo, yesterday.
“The directorate will continue to fine tune its programmes and strategies in line with international best practices in order to meet the increasing challenges posed by unemployment.
“I am proud to say at this juncture that the directorate has imparted marketable skills in more than 100,000 hitherto, unemployed youths.
“This has been made possible by the articulation of the programme in line with the realities of the economy, effective delivery of the scheme and extensive collaboration with local and foreign agencies.’’
Edegbai, who described youth unemployment as disturbing, noted that the programme was designed to provide technical and vocational skills to unemployed youths.
“Unemployment in whatever form is economically, politically and socially intolerable.
“It is a dehumanising factor in the economy that can lead to a crisis situation.
“No single agency can sufficiently solve the problem of unemployment, hence, the decision of the NDE to embark on extensive collaboration with public and private agencies to tackle the problem,” she said.
She urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the tools given to them to better their lives and families.
“I wish to tell the beneficiaries of this empowerment that huge resources have been committed to their training and procurement of these equipment and tools.
“This translates to the fact that to whom much is given, much is expected and all eyes are on you to make judicious use of this rare opportunity,’’ she said.
The coordinator lauded the efforts of the founder of Makis and Empowerment Initiatives, Miss Abibat Yakubu, for sponsoring and empowering the youths.
Earlier, Yakubu disclosed that 106 youths had been trained and empowered with starter packs to run their business outfits.
She said that the beneficiaries had successfully acquired various skills in computer training, GSM phone repair, hair dressing, soap making, catering and events management.
