Between PDP And APC
When I did write about the achievements of Gov
ernor Chibuike, Rotimi Amaechi in my September article titled, “Where Has Amaechi Failed” published in this newspaper, I had described Amaechi as a true democrat, not necessarily because he is my governor, but because he is a man who is working towards actualizing the true meaning of democracy especially in the West African region.
Take a discrete analysis of nations and or countries that are associated with the concept of modernity and development. The United States of America for example has two dominant political parties of nearly equal strength and political might; the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. These parties work hand in hand to ensure that America and Americans enjoy the best of life, attention and reputation with little or no antagonism of any kind.
United Kingdom is no different at all. Whoever recommended the multi-party system for Nigeria did that at the detriment of the polity. So many mushroom political parties that are hitherto struggling for national attention/recognition on a continuum suffer defeat from the ruling and national party, PDP. If we want to ensure that the minority too should have a say, it will be appropriate to spring up or allow another political party, strong in might and as popular as PDP and if this is formed by way of amalgamation of three or more insignificant mushroom parties is not in any way abysmal. Metaphorically, another political party as powerful as PDP which membership will cut across the country will bolster and ensure a fair play ground for politicians if they wish to advance national course rather than selfish whims and caprices. The springing up of another strong party should not give room for ethnic bigotry, political sabotage, blackball and or blackmail. Rather it will serve as a sober reflection, watchdog, scale machine and efficiency meter to balance efforts and performances which I envisage as a potent mechanism for rapid positive change and even development,.
Whether we agree or not, if we look back, we will decipher how far we have gone, what we left behind and the enormous progress we are making. We cannot afford to dissipate the efforts of our heroes past. We should not forget in a hurry how they toiled day and night until they realised independence for the nations. The different political parties formed were all zestful and forward looking about self government. I was hoping that the springing up of APC will awaken in politicians and Nigerians the spirit of patriotism, healthy competition and a yearning for a positive and even development that will look beyond party and ethnic boundaries. An awakening that will pivot the economy of this great nation to an enviable height, an awakening that will onscientize politicking and politicians to evolve genuine programme and modalities to cross-fertilize ideas as to strengthen national unity.
It is no longer a hear say that political parties especially a popular party had the luxury of presenting candidates who were unfit or incapable of running for a particular electoral position,.all because there were no other strong political party equal in strength and popularity to compete as such. This trend am sure will change given the popularity of another strong party.
PDP and APC would in 2015 election decide the fate of Nigeria and Nigerians. The masses have great hopes that these two political parties would work hand-in hand to deliver the dividends of democracy in a manner that will benefit the masses.
Nevertheless, after 2015 election, Nigerians will scorn at the idea of multi-party system especially the type currently in practice that is only a status symbol for democracy where candidates are planted or sponsored to share possibly the votes which should have been casted in favour of a near or threatening political party during election- causing one political party to constantly remain in power. In an ideal democratic setting, one party under the scenario of many political parties does not constantly produce the president and almost all the key leadership and political positions; it amounts to tyranny which is detrimental to the nation.
With no ado, I want to re-direct our minds as I mention states and governors who did not win election under the platform of a dominant party but who had performed perfectly in the course of governance; the Lagos State governor-Babatude Fashola, Adams Oshomole of Edo State, Imo state Governor-Rochas Okorocha etc these governors have proven that given other political party equal opportunity, they will do even better than the dominant party. At 54, Nigeria should reflect soberly on the need for change. Accepting another political party as strong, well, able and popular as PDP will speak volume of positive change and national development. Let us neutralize our minds, shun every sycophancies and political mal-apropriatism, implore honesty and apply wit as we saddle to elect the next shield of leadership in 2015.
No doubt, Goodluck Jonathan has proven himself worthy to re-run for the presidency. While he is allowed and given fair play ground to exercise his franchise, no Nigerian should associate him with any political antagonism of any kind. Rather encourage enterprising and honest politicians to try their popularity. After all, it is the total number of votes cast that will decide the winner.
Nevertheless, PDP and APC will usher Nigeria into a long lasting relief from corruption of all kinds so that by the nation’s 54th birthday, we shall for once celebrate one year of uninterrupted power supply, near 100% access to medicare, portable water and an approximately 80% to 90% employment for the teaming population. The masses are hopeful of the bliss they await to savour from the teaming of our national parties – PDP and APC. Happy birthday to my dear nation-Nigeria.
