Wike May Lose Title As Party Leader …As Opposition In PDP Fights Back
Following the continued violent crisis within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, the current Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike may be stripped of his title as the leader of the party in Rivers State.
This development, The Tide learnt is to check the violent crisis in the party in the state and also unite all members towards winning the forthcoming elections in the country.
Some members of the party, who spoke with The Tide in an interview, expressed fears that if the crisis continues, the party in the state may not withstand the already formidable All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
The Tide gathered that some stakeholders are working on how to invoke the relevant sections of the party’s constitution to strip Wike of his title as the leader of the party.
It was learnt that the PDP constitution indicated that if a serving governor is not a member of the party, a former governor can become the leader or a high ranking officer in the state.
Members of the party said based on this section of the PDP Constitution, Dr Peter Odili, a former governor in the state or the minister of sports could take over the position of the leader of the party.
They regretted that members of the party allowed the Minister of State for Education to assume the position after the state Governor, Rt. Hon Chibuike Amaechi dumped the party last year due to protracted crisis within the party.
Already, it was learnt that party elders and stakeholders have sent a petition to the National Executive Committee of the party over the crisis in the party, and have demanded for a change in the leadership of the party in the state.
The current crisis started last week when the state Chairman of the party, Chief Felix Obuah called some prominent elder statesmen, including Chief A.K. Horsfall, Prof. Israel Owate and others, rascals for inviting governorship aspirants to a dialogue session on their ambition.
It was learnt that a Non-Governmental Organization, the Rivers Mainstream Coalition had invited 25 governorship aspirants under the PDP for a meeting, but the state chairman issued a directive to the aspirants and members not to attend the meeting.
He also threatened to sanction Chief Bekinbo Soberekon and Prof Israel Owate, who signed the invitation, describing members of the organisation as ‘rascals’.
The meeting, according to Owate, was aimed at uniting and bringing harmony among members and to ensure free and non-violent primary during the state congress of the party in October.
Efforts to reach the Media Assistant to the state Chairman of the PDP, Mr Jerry Needam was not successful as he refused to pick his calls or respond to SMS sent to his cell phone.
Also, Mr Samuel Anosike, a frontline member of the Grassroots Democratic Initiative (GDI) could not be reached and an SMS to his phone was never responded to as at press time.
