Group Warns Minister, Board Against Hike In Train Fares
A group of ‘Concerned
Passengers” using the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) mass transit services in Lagos have urged the Federal Government to stop the NRC from increasing the fares.
The group, particularly, called on the minister of transport and the chairman of NRC board to intervene in the planned increase in fares.
The corporation, had on May 26, announced fare increment for its Ogun/Lagos Mass Transit Train Services (MTTS) from N150 to N230 from June 2.
The corporation also said that its newly-introduced air-conditioned service will cost N750 from Ijoko in Ogun to Ido and Apapa in Lagos.
Spokesman for the group, Mr Victor Abraham, told newsmen in Lagos that the group had staged a protest against the increment on May 30 at the corporation’s headquarters, Ebute Meta, Lagos.
“We have also forwarded our letter of appeal to the Minister of Transport, Alhaji Idris Umar, and the Chairman Board of Directors of the Corporation, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, over the planned increase.
According to Abraham, the corporation’s plan to increase its fare is in total disrespect to its passengers in view of the corporation’s continuous poor services and falling standard.
“We want the minister and the chairman to caution the corporation against the planned increase because it is like adding insult to injury of the passengers based on the corporation continuous poor services.
“We want the minister and the chairman to pay unscheduled visit to the corporation or send monitoring unit to ascertain the corporation’s continuous degraded condition of operation.
“The corporation lacks enough and well-maintained coaches for its ever increasing passengers, thereby causing untold congestion and most times passengers collapse in the trains.
“The corporation had in the past two years abandoned its second track and operating only on one track, thereby causing passengers’ untold delay.
“This is because one train has to wait for hours for another to pass on the same track.
“So, in our letter, we appealed to the minister and the managing director to ensure that the corporation first improves on its services before increasing fares,” he said.
Mr Ademuyiwa Adekanmbi, the NRC Lagos District Public Relations Officer, however, told newsmen that the corporation would increase the number of coaches on its MTTS services from June 2.
Adekanmbi said that the management would also introduce air-conditioned trains for both the MTTS and long distance inter-city services.
