The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) in Rivers State, has embarked on an aggressive housing scheme estimated at N1.4 billion for its workers in the state.
The foundation stone laying ceremony of the housing project, took place at the weekend in Ahoada town, the headquarters of Ahoada East Local Government Area of the State.
According to the chairman of the occasion, Mr. E, Gibson, who represented the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Mr. Ade Aboderin, the housing project consists of 200 units of two bedroom housing estate.
Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony in Ahoada, Gibson, who is also the chairman of the NSCDC Co-operative Society, said that the housing scheme was initiated by the co-operative arm of the NSCDC in the state.
“The NSCDC housing project is a dream of the co-operative arm of the NSCDC in the state to tackle the endemic accommodation problem for staff in the state”.
According to him, the housing scheme was in line with the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan and the NSCDC commandant general, which he said, must be assisted to come to friction.
Earlier, the Chairman of the main construction company, Judeks & Company Nigeria Limited, Mr. ThankGod Ejiohuo, said the multi-million Naira project would be completed within one year, if all things work out as planned.
Ejiohuo explained that the 200 units of two bedroom flats will be provided with modern facilities, which he said, will include access roads, underground cables, water facilities and others as stipulated in the contract agreement.
Also speaking at the occasion, Eze Christian Ideozu, who reresnted the paramount ruler of Ahoada Kingdom, expressed the joy of his people for the project in their domain.
Eze Ideozu described the housing project as a welcome development, and promised that the chiefs and people of Ahoada Kingdom would do all within their power to protect and assist the project come true.
He, however, strongly appealed to the NSCDC to give a quota of their recruitment exercise to the people of Ahoada.
The traditional ruler explained that this was necessary because it will give the people a sense of belonging.
“How would you explain a situation where you find about 100 NSCDC staff within an area but without even one person from the same area as a staff. It is really that bad”.
The ground-breaking ceremony witnessed a large turn out of people from the area.
