S’South Consumer Protection Council Cries Out For Funds
The Consumer Protection
Council (CPC), South-South zonal office, has identified poor funding as the major setback to its operations.
Making this known to journalists in Port Harcourt, the Zonal Coordinator of CPC in the South-South, Chinonye Ikegbuka, stated that lack of funds negatively affected their operations in the zone.
He said that the operations of the council have been hampered due to poor funding as the organisation could not effectively respond promptly to issues across the states in the zone, but merely responds to matters within the nearby states like Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom.
At present, the Zonal Coordinator explained that the CPC in the South-South zone has only one operational Toyota Hilux vehicle that enables them to carry out their duties, pointing out that one Hilux vehicle is not enough for their operations.
Ikegbuka, however, maintained that the council in recent time has received about 90 complaints, but that about 80 per cent of such complaints has been tackled, adding that in one of its recent operations, the council destroyed a multi-million naira cold room in Port Harcourt, for storing unhealthy frozen fishes.
The CPC zonal coordinator also affirmed the council’s resolve to reach out to all the areas of coverage in the South-South zone to ensure that the rights of consumers are protected.
He also called on consumers in the South-South zone to always take advantage of the activities of the council and report every infringement on their right to the council for necessary actions.
Ikegbuka therefore, sued for proper funding of the council, stressing that funds are needed for logistics planning.
