Protein Requirements: Vegetarian Prescribes Herbivorous Animals Consumption
Following the rise in the
consumption of meat by most households, a veterinarian, Dr. Cletus Opia, has said that people should go for those animals that were herbivorous for their protein needs.
According to him, the rate at which many people consume dog meat also known as “404” without even caring to know the condition under which they were slaughtered and cooked was unwholesome.
Dr. Opia, who spoke to our correspondent in Port Harcourt, recently, said the omnivorous and carnivorous ones were basically scavengers of the earth.
He said most of these scavrengers were left to roam the streets unattended to in search of food mostly at dirty areas of towns and villages.
According to him, it was uncommon to see pigs, dogs and their like in almost every slum feeding voraciously on every dead thing they come across.
Highlighting further he said pigs were known cannibals and would not stop to consume even dead human bodies that ere abandoned.
“Instance abound where pigs feed freely on dead bodies especially where violence erupteds and people killed were not removed on time” he said.
Even going biblical he said it was for this reason that God recommended certain animals and fish for man’s consumption after the great flood due to the loss of plant life.
He explained that basically man has the digestive system of herbivoous animals like goat, cow and other related ones.
“The anatomy of man is not made for eating flesh that is why man finds it difficult in cutting and chewing flesh” he said.
On the choice of fish for the needed protein, he said scaly-fish was preferable to non scaly ones even as he said, “in all, moderation” should be the watchword adding that a lot of vegetables and fruits should go with them as they facilitate in the digestion of meat and fish.
