Shippers Seek NJI’s Collaboration In Dispensation Of Cases
The Executive Secretary,
Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), Mr Hassan Bello, has called for the training of judges on maritime conventions to ensure speedy and sound dispensation of cases on maritime.
Bello made this known when the organising Committee on Maritime Seminar for Judges visited, Justice Umaru Eri, the Administrator, Nigerian Judicial Institute (NJI) in Abuja last Tuesday.
He said the purpose of the visit was to acquaint the NJI on the issues slated for discussion at the forthcoming 13th Maritime
Seminar for Judges.
“The council is desirous of seeing its members get speedy and timely justice delivered on maritime cases. We consider speedy delivery of justice very important to the economy,’’ Bello said.
Bello said that speedy disposal of maritime cases would boost the maritime industry, thereby enhancing the economic development of the country.
“The seminar has been internationally acknowledged for attracting high quality discussions and presentations by eminent jurists who participated as resource persons and participants each year,’’ he said.
Bello, spoke on the quality of decisions of the judges as being paramount, called for equal participation of judges and justices from both federal and states.
Earlier, Eri pledged the support of the NJI toward the development of the maritime industry and quick delivery of cases concerning maritime activities.
Eri said that the impact and performance assessment of the entire judiciary was necessary as it would enhance speedy justice.
Also, Justice Ibrahim Auta, Chief Judge, Federal High Court, said that cases needed to be handled in prompt and efficient manners in various courts.
Auta, who is also Chairman of the organising committee, said continuous collaboration between the NSC and NJI, had strengthened the courts in terms of performance.
He said the collaboration has also benefited Nigeria’s economy through timely adjudication of marine cargo claims.
This, he said, had saved importers and exporters millions in revenue.
The seminar is scheduled to hold in Abuja from June 10 to June 12.
