Checking Blood Sales In Hospitals
There is no gainsaying the fact that
the availability of blood and the due
management of the blood banks in hospitals across the country have become a major challenge for public health delivery in Nigeria. The ordeal patients who need blood transfusion in the nation’s medical centres go through is better imagined.
This worrisome, yet all-important issue, was brought to the front burner of national discourse recently in Abuja at an awareness campaign on voluntary blood donation by the Donor Recruiter, National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), Mr Ehigie Olayemi.
NBTS, in collaboration with Rotary Club of Abuja, Gwarimpa Chapter had embarked on a two-day awareness campaign on the importance of blood donation. Olayemi, noted that the sale of blood to patients in hospitals had discouraged voluntary donation and called for an end to the practice.
He called for the enactment of an enabling legislation for the NBTS to stop the sale of blood across the country, noting that the NBTS has the responsibility to stop the sale of blood, but have no law to back them in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Expressing the determination of the NBTS to put an end to the sale of blood that still happen in many hospitals, Olayemi said that until there was such legal backing they can do very little. He said that many Nigerians were not interested in donating blood voluntarily, in spite of the awareness campaigns.
The demand for blood by patients in hospitals, he said remain high, compared to supply, adding that it behooves all Nigerians from the age of 18 to 65 to donate blood at the centres located in their offices across the country.
The Tide supports the call by NBTS for a legislation to properly manage blood in hospitals as timely, considering the fact that the major beneficiaries of blood donated to the service are accident victims, Anaemic and cancer patients, pregnant women and people living positive among others.
The sale of blood in hospitals is, to say the least, is in-human and therefore, unacceptable, especially in the age and time when a good percentage of the population cannot afford to buy blood at such exorbitant rate, especially under an emergency situation.
The Tide thinks that sufficient understanding on the need to donate blood voluntarily is required by the citizenry as many souls have been lost on account of some persons not being able to pay for blood.
Apart from the benefit it has for patients, people need to donate blood freely as nobody knows who may need it.
According to experts, excess blood in the system can also constitute some health challenges as it could lead to heart, kidney and other organ-related problems. Olayemi corroborated this by saying that “By donating blood voluntarily, you are helping yourself, your heart, liver and kidney, because high percentage of haemoglobin is a burden to these organs”.
Thus, while public spirited individuals are expected to donate blood freely for the benefit of patients in dire need of it, blood bank officials and other hospital personnel should refrain from selling blood that are donated.
As it is, the NBTS should, without further delay, collaborate with the National Orientation Agency to sensitise the public on the importance of blood donation and other humanitarian activities. On its parts, the National Assembly should speedily work on the legislation that would regulate blood management in our hospitals in the interest of all.
By the time these steps are taken, more lives would be saved; health restored and humanity served. This is another call to duty that must be taken seriously. We expect that the need to donate blood will be promoted in the schools, churches and social gatherings to enable society stand in the gap for its people.
